Yingkou is a port city on the Gulf of Bo Hai in Liaoning Province, 400 miles northeast of China’s capital, Beijing. Yingkou is a city with a regional population of approximately 2.2 million people. Yingkou twinned with Jacksonville, Florida in 1990.

History

Ape fossils unearthed near Yingkou in 1984 proved that the region was inhabited by primitive people 200,000 years ago. This dramatic discovery brought many of the world’s leading anthropologists to Liaoning Province.

More recently, Yingkou was one of the first cities in China to issue postal stamps and established a modern postal service. The Red Cross Association had set up its first Chinese branch in Yingkou. More than 11 foreign countries had set up their consulates and commercial authorities established themselves in Yingkou. 

Culture

Yingkou Natatorium – a swimming facility – is located at the center of the city. At 4,084 square meters, it receives more than 100,000 swimmers per year. It also has many facilities such as guest rooms, Dafu Restaurant and bar. Meanwhile, Yingkou Dashang New Mart is a shopping complex built in 1983. It is one of the largest retail centers in Yingkou City and deals in nearly 20,000 kinds of commodities.

Business

Today, Yingkou has the world’s richest reserve of magnesium, as well as some 30 other ores and minerals. The region is China’s leading producer of boron and talcum. A temperate climate and rich soil result in a bounty of rice, fruit and all kinds of aquatic foods, making the Yingkou region one of China’s most productive “breadbaskets”.

Natural resources are just the beginning of Yingkou’s contribution to China’s economy. No less than 35 products are manufactured in the city, including such diverse items as machine tools, clothing, building materials, rubber goods, refrigerators, musical instruments, furniture, tires, printing presses, radios, and fire alarms. Other industries include salt refining, paper goods, ship-building, food processing and aquaculture.

Yingkou Economic and Technological Development Zone adjoins Bohai Sea to the west. In the Zone, Yingkou New Port has an annual handling capacity of 18 million tons. The docks in the heart of Yingkou were the first in northeast China to serve international shipping more than 130 years ago. A modern terminal is under construction at Bayuquan, 29 miles southeast of the city.  

Mayor Zhao, Xin-Liang, always seeking more international trade for Yingkou, visited the United States in 1988, including a stop in Jacksonville, The similarities between the two cities and his warm reception by Mayor Tommy Hazouri encouraged Zhao to pursue a sister city relationship.

Mayor Hazouri agreed to the twinning in March 1989, and in May a delegation representing the city visited Yingkou to make plans for the signing ceremony, which took place in Jacksonville in May 1990.
